Romanian Motorways Review Q4 2016

Find below a review of relevant news for each Romanian motorway project:

I. A1 MOTORWAY (Bucharest - Nadlac)

Bucharest - Pitesti: Entire length opened to traffic as of the writing of this article.

Pitesti - Sibiu: The route for this section was finally selected: Sibiu - Boita - Racovita - Valeni - Curtea de Arges - Pitesti. This route follows DN7 on the valley of river Olt and will include at least six toad tunnels. Sibiu ringroad is opened to traffic (17.2km).

Sibiu - Orastie: Segment 3 finally reopened in October after repairs were completed. Segments 1, 2 and 4 are also open.

Orastie - Deva: Entire length opened to traffic as of the writing of this article.

Deva - Lugoj: Segment 1 is open for traffic; 15km of segment 2 were supposed to be opened by the end of 2016 but this did not happen. Works in progress on segments 2, 3 and 4, which should all open in 2017 (with some smaller parts due in 2018).

Lugoj - Timisoara, Timisoara - Arad and Arad - Nadlac are all opened to traffic.

II. A3 MOTORWAY (Bucharest - Bors)

Bucharest - Ploiesti: 55.5km of this section are open to traffic. 3km of the remaining 6.5km were scheduled to be opened by the end of 2016 but this did not happen. Estimated opening of the final 6.5km in 2017

Ploiesti - Brasov: Winner announced for tender on Rasnov-Cristian, a 6.3km stretch on Comarnic-Brasov, but decision is not final. No additional news.

Brasov - Targu Mures: This section has finally been dropped from official plans, with access to Transylvania replaced by A10 Sebes - Turda, currently under construction.

Targu Mures - Gilau: 52km on this section are opened to traffic, while for the remaining 56.5 km contracts were signed in 2015; contract for segment 1 of this stretch was canceled, with a new tender announced in October 2016.

Gilau - Bors: The contract to resume works on Suplacu de Barcau - Bors was canceled. Works continue on Gilau - Nadasel, with opening due in 2017.

III. A10 MOTORWAY (Sebes - Turda)

Works in progress for all four segments, but slowed down due to beaurocratic procedures. Completion estimated in 2017 for two segments and 2018 for the other two.

IV. OTHER PROJECTS

No major news on other proposed motorways.

V. COMPLETED MOTORWAYS

Motorways A2: Bucharest - Constanta and A4: Constanta Ringroad are completed with entire length opened to traffic. Additionally, 11km between Balint and Lugoj ringroad are opened on the proposed A6 Lugoj - Calafat motorway and 3.5km between Arad and DN7 are opened on the proposed A11 Arad - Oradea motorway.
