Romanian Motorways Quarterly Review - Q3 2016

Find below a review of relevant news for Romanian motorways and motorway projects:

I. A1 MOTORWAY (Bucharest - Nadlac)

Bucharest - Pitesti: Entire length opened to traffic as of the writing of this article.

Pitesti - Sibiu: Work continues on the feasibility study, to be completed in spring 2017. This section of A1 motorway will be completed in 2021, according to the most recent estimates. Sibiu ringroad is open to traffic (17.2km).

Sibiu - Orastie: Romanian National Motorway Company (CNADNR) cotinues work on segment 3, which is closed for repairs. The opening date announced constantly in the past few months, of September 30, was delayed indefinitely due to bad weather. The other three segments are open to traffic.

Orastie - Deva: Entire length opened to traffic as of the writing of this article.

Deva - Lugoj: Segment 1 open. Work in progress for the other three segments, with various issues resolved in the past few months. A 15km stretch on segment 2 to be opened by the end of the year, with most of segments 2, 3 and 4 to be opened in 2017.

Lugoj - Timisoara: Entire length opened to traffic as of the writing of this article.

Timisoara - Arad: Entire length opened to traffic as of the writing of this article.

Arad - Nadlac: Entire length opened to traffic as of the writing of this article.

II. A3 MOTORWAY (Bucharest - Bors)

Bucharest - Ploiesti: 55.5km of this section are open to traffic. 3.2km out of the remaining 6.5 to be opened by the end of the year, while 3.3km to be opened in 2017.

Ploiesti - Brasov: There are no segments open or under construction on this section. Tenders for segments at both ends of Comarnic - Brasov launched this year; one was challenged, while the results for the other are pending.

Brasov - Targu Mures: No recent news. This segment was removed from the most recent version of the Transporation Master Plan.

Targu Mures - Gilau: 52km on this section are opened to traffic, while the difference consists of 5 segments; on 4 of these segments works have begun or preparations are under way (tender canceled for one of the 5 segments).

Gilau - Bors: Works in progress on Gilau-Nadasel, with completion date by the end of 2016. Unfortunately this section will not be opened due to a missing connecting bridge. Works resumed on Suplacu de Barcau - Bors after some issues between contractor and Transport Ministry.

III. A10 MOTORWAY (Sebes - Turda)

Work in progress after various issues have been solved in the past few months. Opening dates for the four segments in 2017-2018.

IV. OTHER PROJECTS

The only segment open on A6: Lugoj - Calafat consists of 11km opened in 2013; this route will not be extended via motorway. The only segment open on A11: Arad - Oradea consists of 3.5km connecting A1 and DN7.

Works started on Bacau ringroad which follows part of A7 Moldova Motorway route. First phase will be opened with single carriageway only. A new tender for the feasibility study and technical project for the Craiova - Pitesti motorway to be launched in November. Any other motorway projects in Romania will be launched only after 2022; an estimated opening date for Iasi - Targu Mures motorway in 2027 was announced recently.

V. COMPLETED MOTORWAYS

Motorways A2: Bucharest - Constanta and A4: Constanta Ringroad are completed with entire length opened to traffic.
